Seven Strategies for Marketing in a Web 2.0 World


Think Creatively, Then Make Good Choices

 When you start to talk about marketing library products and services, the four P’s of marketing come to mind: product, pricing, promotion, and placement. Traditional marketing plans identified the product or service features that would satisfy the wants and needs of consumers, as well as the right price, the method of promotion, and the merchandizing or distribution.



1. Learn about social media. First and foremost, it is critical that library staff participate in and understand social media by learning about it firsthand. Efforts like the Learning 2.0 program (http://plcmcl2-about.blogspot.com) developed by Helene Blowers for the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County are great ways to start to explore social software. Fundamentally, marketing in a Web 2.0 world requires us to think in both new and old ways at the same time.
YouTube, del.icio.us, Flickr, digg, MySpace, and Technorati are examples of new engines that you need to understand in order to effectively use them to reach your markets.
2. Create a Web 2.0 marketing plan. Web 2.0 marketing efforts can pop up organically and some may already be happening at your library. It is useful to step back and think strategically about where and how you’re going to commit your marketing resources online. Tap into the creativity of your staff and users to create a social media marketing plan. Look at your marketing, customer service, and Web site for natural opportunities and synergies for social media marketing.
Open your mind to radical new ideas that fit the nature of social media. For instance, let your audience create content on your site and pass it along. Try a photo captioner service where they (or you) can submit local photos, add captions, and then share links or send the new photo as a postcard to their friends. Or invite your passionate users to create promotional videos about your library, then use them on your local TV channels and post them online everywhere.
3. Participate! Join the conversation. Social media applications are two-way streets (as opposed to the old one-way messages of standard promotion). There are lots of ways to join in. You can add social tools and services (such as Weblogs, wikis, tagging, video blogs, etc.) to your library Web sites. Enable comments on blogs and allow users to contribute to wikis.
Instead of waiting for our audiences to come to our Web sites or blogs, we can join the conversation wherever it is—on users’ blogs, Web forums, MySpace, course Web sites, team rooms, wikis, etc. (Always respect the norms or conventions for communicating in a particular social medium.)
Discover where your target audiences hang out online and join them. Create a MySpace or Facebook profile for your library like Topeka and Shawnee County (Kan.) Public Library has. (It boasts 1,135 friends!) Build a profile and offer content and services that attract links, contacts, and friends. If your users spend time on Wikipedia, add or improve your library’s entry.

Web 2.0 Definitions and Explanations

  • O'Reilly's What Is Web 2.0 - The famous meme map alone is worth serious study and is the central work defining the interlocking elements of Web 2.0. O'Reilly touches on Web 2.0 as having more of a "gravitational core" than being a concrete set of technologies. He also introduces all the major planks of his vision of the next generation of the Web as a set of best practices from the first generation. A terrific read worth every minute spent on it. Finish this before starting the rest.
  • Wikipedia Definition for Web 2.0 - While this entry undergoes near constant revision, I recommend a visit to see what an amalgam of opinionated contributors brings to the table for Web 2.0 definition. Devoid of hype or even many buzzwords, the entry has become somewhat disappointing but the key facts are present and is also notably lacking in major anti-hype. In the end, a balanced if slightly boring view produced by a little wisdom of the crowds.

To Blog or Not to Blog?

With only 54 of the Fortune 500 companies blogging, this is a question still being pondered by many. Cisco, HP and Intel are in that blogging minority and Reem Abeidoh of Problogger interviewed me, Tac Anderson of HP and Michael Brito of Intel to come up with A Guide to Corporate Blogging.

Ryan McLean commented on the post stating, "I don't think I will ever be in a fortune 500 company. But if I ever am then this post will come in handy." I agree with Reem's response that despite the company size "ultimately the process is very similar." And although I represented the Cisco blog in this interview I have helped build blogging strategies for many small companies and have followed the same process successfully. So whether you're coming from a big or small company this guide is a must read!

    For the second month in a row, Facebook is ranked at number one for Web 2.0 companies and web sites.  With traffic growing at a ridiculous rate, new users signing up by the thousands every hour, Facebook is perfectly poised to be the reigning king of Web 2.0.  While myspace still has the most traffic on most accords, facebook with launching its new development platform has really propelled itself ahead of the competition.

    One of the world’s largest social networking sites, Fotolog is an ever-evolving global network where members communicate and connect through photographs.  A simple and fun way for anyone to express themselves on a daily basis, Fotolog allows members to easily publish an online photo diary, or photo blog, and share it worldwide.
    What makes Fotolog special is not just the ability to post photos, but the ability to connect with people.     As flickr’s tag lines states, flickr is the best online photo sharing application on the Internet today.  It by far has the best tools for uploading your photos, organizing your photos, and sharing them with your friends and family.  You can use your browser, mobile phone, PDA, and literally any device that can take pictures, to upload your photo’s to flickrflickr then takes it to the next level by allowing you to share your pictures in a million ways! 
    Friends and family can search the pictures on the web, subscribe to an RSS feed to be notified of new pictures, sending emails from the site, and other crazy ways that you might want to suggest!  If you want to share pictures, flickr is your tool!

    del.icio.us is a social bookmarking website — the primary use of del.icio.us is to store your bookmarks online, which allows you to access the same bookmarks from any computer and add bookmarks from anywhere, too. On del.icio.us, you can use tags to organize and remember your bookmarks, which is a much more flexible system than folders.
    You can also use del.icio.us to see the interesting links that your friends and other people bookmark, and share links with them in return. You can even browse and search del.icio.us to discover the cool and useful bookmarks that everyone else has saved — which is made easy with tags.

    In the old days, Google Maps would still be the new kid on the block, however, in Web 2.0 days, Google Maps is ancient.  However, there is no better way to help you get from A to B quicker.  Sure there are other tools on the market, some of which have been around even before Google itself, but they are terrible in comparison to the speed and ease of use!

    Because everyone shouldn’t see everything.  What a great slogan, and a great way to compete with YouTube and other clones.  vimeo is extremely clean and easy to use, and I love it and enjoy the experience much better than YouTube.  If I want to see ridiculous videos, and read comments with people bashing each other, I use YouTube.  But when I want to share a video with my family, I use vimeo.  Check it out today, I guarantee you will love the site and visit it daily!

    People have known for years that making a list of goals is the best way to achieve them. But most of us never get around to making a list. 43 Things is great for that!
